Black Korina Tonewood

Black Korina, also known as Black Limba is another classic tonewood usually associated with the early versions of Gibson's Flying V and Explorer models. Black (& white) Korina are the same tree that grows in tropical West Africa. The difference between Black Korina and White Korina is the way the grain is coloured where the darker black Korina comes mostly from older trees.

Black Korina is similar to Mahogany in weight, hardness, texture and sound. Working with Black Korina is relatively easy with both machines and hand tools. It takes glues and finishes well. Luthiers tend to choose Black Korina over mahogany mostly due to the attractive grain structure of Black Korina.
